How To Spring Cleaning Your Beauty Routine
Let’s talk about spring cleaning your beauty routine…
There’s something about spring that makes you want to get your life together.
You open the windows. You clean out a drawer. You briefly consider becoming the kind of person who drinks lemon water every morning and has a perfectly curated skincare routine.
And then you look at your bathroom counter.
Seven half-used serums. A moisturizer you think you like. A foundation that hasn’t matched your skin tone since 2018. And at least one product you bought because someone on TikTok said it would “change your life.”
So instead of adding more to the chaos, let’s do something radical.
Let’s simplify.
What to Toss
Let’s start with the obvious — and by obvious, I mean the things we’ve all been quietly ignoring.
Expired Products
I know. No one wants to admit how long that eye cream has been sitting in the drawer.
But if it’s expired, separating, or smells…questionable?
It’s time.
We’re not risking our skin for a product we barely liked in the first place.
Anything That Irritates Your Skin
You know the one.
The product you keep using even though it makes your skin:
- red
- dry
- slightly angry
This is your permission to let it go.
If it doesn’t work for you, it doesn’t belong in your routine.
“Someday” Products
The ones you bought with good intentions but never actually use.
The complicated mask. The extra step. The product that requires a level of commitment you simply do not have.
We’re not building a skincare routine for a hypothetical version of ourselves.
We’re building one for who we are right now.
What to Keep
Now for the good stuff — the things that actually deserve a spot on your shelf.
The Basics That Actually Work
At this stage of life, your skin does not need chaos.
It needs consistency.
Your core routine should be simple:
- gentle cleanser
- moisturizer
- SPF (yes, I had to say it)
If those are working for you, you’re already doing great.
Products That Make You Feel Good
Not everything has to be about results.
If you have a product that makes your routine feel like a small ritual — a nice texture, a scent you love, something that makes you pause for a second — keep it.
That’s part of the experience.
Anything That Supports Your Skin Now
Midlife skin is different.
It tends to be:
- drier
- more sensitive
- slightly unpredictable
So focus on products that support:
- hydration
- skin barrier health
- comfort
Not aggressive, 12-step routines that promise to “fix everything.”
What to Stop Buying
This is where things get honest.
Every New Trend
Not everything on TikTok is meant for you.
Actually, most of it isn’t.
You don’t need:
- 10-step routines
- every new serum launch
- anything described as “going viral”
Your skin is not a social experiment.
Products That Promise Miracles
If something sounds too good to be true…
It probably is.
No product is going to:
- completely reverse aging
- erase every line
- transform your skin overnight
And honestly, we don’t need it to.
Duplicates of Things You Already Own
Be honest with yourself.
How many moisturizers do you currently have open?
Exactly.
A Very Real Spring Reset
You don’t need a complete overhaul.
You don’t need to throw everything out and start fresh.
You just need to:
- let go of what isn’t working
- keep what feels good
- stop buying things you don’t need
That’s it.
The Bottom Line
Spring cleaning your beauty routine isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about making space for what actually works for you now.
Less clutter.
Less pressure.
More ease.
And honestly?
That’s the kind of glow-up I’m interested in. ✨
