every day whimsy

How to Cultivate Whimsy in Midlife (Yes, It’s Possible)

Recently I saw that “cultivating whimsy” is trending online.

And I have to say, if you had asked me ten years ago what I thought about cultivating whimsy, I probably would have assumed it required a flower crown, a ukulele, and a suspicious amount of free time.

Whimsy felt like something reserved for:

  • art teachers
  • children
  • women who own at least three pairs of fairy wings and self-identify was “twee”

Not for regular adults with jobs, responsibilities, and lower back pain.

But lately I’ve started to reconsider.

Because somewhere along the way, many of us quietly stopped doing things that were unnecessarily delightful.

And maybe it’s time to bring a little of that back.

What Even Is Whimsy?

Whimsy is one of those words that feels slightly ridiculous when you say it out loud.

But when you think about it, whimsy is simply playfulness for grown-ups.

It’s the small, joyful things that don’t really serve a productive purpose but make life feel a little lighter.

Things like:

  • buying flowers just because they’re pretty
  • taking the long scenic walk instead of the efficient one
  • wearing the outfit that makes you feel slightly dramatic
  • putting glittery stickers in your planner like a third grader

None of these things are necessary.

Which is exactly the point.

The Myth That Adults Aren’t Allowed to Be Playful

At some point in adulthood, many of us absorbed the idea that we were supposed to become very serious people.

Responsible.

Efficient.

Productive.

And while those things are certainly useful when you have bills to pay and emails to answer, they also have a way of slowly squeezing the fun out of everyday life.

We start optimizing everything.

Even joy.

And before we know it, we’re living a life that technically works but feels a little…flat.

Which is where whimsy comes in.

You Can Absolutely Learn New Tricks in Midlife

One of the best parts of getting older is realizing that most of the rules you thought existed were completely made up.

You can start hobbies.

You can change your mind.

You can wear the bright lipstick.

You can take a pottery class.

You can buy the sparkly notebook.

Midlife isn’t the closing chapter where we settle into beige routines forever.

If anything, it’s the moment where we finally have enough self-awareness to ask:

What would make my life feel a little more delightful?

And then actually do it.

Small Ways to Cultivate Whimsy

You don’t have to overhaul your entire personality.

Whimsy lives in small choices.

For example:

Take a different route on your daily walk just to see something new.

Buy the ridiculously fancy pastry instead of the sensible snack.

Light a candle in the middle of the afternoon for absolutely no reason.

Start a tiny ritual that makes you smile, like pulling a tarot card with your morning coffee.

Or my personal favorite: allow yourself to do something purely because it feels fun, not because it’s useful.

Radical, I know.

Why Whimsy Actually Matters

It’s easy to dismiss whimsical things as silly or frivolous.

But moments of playfulness and curiosity are actually deeply restorative.

They remind us that life isn’t just a long list of obligations.

It’s also a series of tiny experiences.

A good song.

A beautiful sunset.

A ridiculous inside joke with a friend.

A quiet cup of tea with a candle lit.

Those little sparks of joy add up.

The Real Midlife Plot Twist

We were told that adulthood would be about responsibility.

And it is.

But it can also be about permission.

Permission to try things.

Permission to change.

Permission to make life a little more colorful.

So if cultivating whimsy feels slightly outside your comfort zone, that’s okay.

You don’t have to transform into a woodland fairy overnight.

Just start small.

Buy the flowers.

Take the scenic route.

Light the candle.

Because it turns out that yes…

You absolutely can teach an old dog new tricks.

And sometimes those tricks include learning how to make life feel a little more magical again. ✨
